Tips For House Hunting with Small Children
When you are house hunting, your attention
is naturally centered on what the real estate agent
is showing you. While your attention is diverted, it
is easy for a small child to get into serious trouble.
This is especially true when visiting homes that do
not have small children. A home that isn't child proof
may not have extra safe guards for preventing nasty
spills down stairways, preventing entry into pool areas,
balconies, or the consumption of hazardous objects or
substances.
For these reasons, we suggest leaving
small children at home. Now, I admit that's easily
said
and not easily done. Some families that are new to
the area may not have anyone to depend upon for childcare.
If you must bring small children with you while you
are house hunting with a real estate agent, please
keep in mind these simple tips.
- If at all possible, bring someone
with you to watch your children while you look over
the home the real estate agent is showing you.
- While viewing a home, always keep
your children at your side. Remember, no one loves
your children as much as you do, so be sure to keep
them from touching the home owner's things. If things
get too hairy trying to stay up with your active toddlers,
setup another appointment with the real estate agent.
It's better to be safe then sorry.
- NEVER, NEVER,
leave a pet or a child in a locked car with the windows
rolled up. In the South, even on seemingly mild days
temperatures inside a car can soar to dangerous levels
within a few short minutes causing death.
Packing the Right Stuff
When house hunting with small children,
be sure to take along their favorite nutritious snacks
and drinks. In between viewing houses, they can energize
themselves with tasty treats. If you are planning to
travel to several locations, you might even consider
taking along things to amuse them.
